Diella TekuIn a bid to support the Muslim community, the 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to introduce a two-day Eid-ul Fitr holiday if his party is voted into power. Mahama made this announcement during his two-day campaign tour of the North East Region, where he met with traditional leaders and engaged with residents.
Mahama highlighted the challenges faced by Muslims when celebrating Eid due to the uncertainty in the moon’s appearance, which determines the end of Ramadan.
“We’re going to add an extra holiday for Eid-ul Fitr,” Mahama said. “Sometimes there’s confusion because some see the moon and others don’t, leading to different prayer days. Whether you break your fast today or tomorrow, everyone deserves a holiday to rest and celebrate.”
Additionally, Mahama expressed concerns about the steep rise in the cost of the annual Hajj pilgrimage over the last eight years. He promised that, under his leadership, the cost of the pilgrimage would be made more affordable, ensuring that more Muslims could fulfill this important religious duty.
Mahama began his campaign tour in the Northeast region on October 2 and is expected to continue engaging with voters in the coming days.
