Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the Convener of the Democracy Hub protest, has been granted bail of GH¢20,000 with two sureties, following his arrest during a protest on September 23, 2024. Barker-Vormawor was arrested alongside 52 others for allegedly causing public disturbances during the protest.
The activist faces several charges, including stealing, unlawful assembly, unlawful damage, assault on a public officer, and offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace. His bail comes after a lengthy legal battle, where he was initially denied bail by the Accra Circuit Court and further remanded by the High Court after an appeal from his legal team.
The High Court judge raised concerns about Barker-Vormawor’s history, noting that he was already on bail for treason felony charges at the time of the alleged offences. The judge expressed apprehension over whether Barker-Vormawor might reoffend if released but issued a warning to the prosecution that bail would be granted if the trial did not commence soon.
In response, Barker-Vormawor’s lawyers repeated their bail application, which was ultimately granted.
As part of his bail conditions, he is required to report to the police twice a week.
