Road Construction Accident on Accra-Winneba Highway Sparks Outrage as Blasting Turns Deadly 46

A devastating accident unfolded on the Buduburam stretch of the Accra-Winneba highway, where road construction efforts took a tragic turn. A rock blast, conducted by a construction company working in the area, caused catastrophic damage, leaving three people dead and over 30 others injured. The blast, intended to clear the path for ongoing roadworks, escalated into chaos despite the temporary halt of traffic along the highway.

Local residents, accustomed to the frequent blasting operations, say they have long endured the damaging effects of the rock explosions. Homes around the Big Apple area have reportedly suffered significant damage, with roofing sheets regularly torn off during the blasting activities. However, this latest incident has crossed a devastating line, sparking anger and grief within the community.

In the aftermath, furious residents attacked the workers involved in the blasting operation. The incident has led to the arrest of a Chinese national believed to be supervising the team responsible for the blast. Authorities are continuing their investigation.

Victims of the explosion were rushed to St. Gregory Hospital in Buduburam, where hospital administrator Matthias Ayegre-Anaba provided an update. “In total, 42 people were brought here. We are referring four patients, two to the 37 Military Hospital and two awaiting transport to Winneba,” Ayegre-Anaba reported. “Currently, those on admission are in stable condition—18 females, nine males, and two in recovery. Sadly, we lost three patients, and three others have been discharged.”
