Majority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament Walk Out Over Speaker's Decision to Declare Seats Vacant 46

On October 17, 2024, the Majority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament staged an unusual walkout in protest of Speaker Alban Bagbin’s approval of a motion declaring four parliamentary seats vacant.

The Speaker’s decision has ignited tensions, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs, led by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, walking out in defiance. Afenyo-Markin clashed with the Speaker before leading the protest out of the Chamber.

The motion, filed by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, argued that the MPs—Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kojo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central)—who intend to contest upcoming elections as independents, have effectively forfeited their seats as per constitutional rules governing party affiliation.
