Assembly members from Greater Accra have thrown their support behind former President John Dramani Mahama for the 2024 presidential race, asserting that his leadership is crucial to address Ghana’s economic woes. At a recent press conference led by Hon. Ziyad Musah, the elected officials highlighted their dissatisfaction with the current economic trajectory under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), focusing on what they view as the shortcomings of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s economic policies.
The assembly members voiced deep concerns about the NPP administration’s handling of key economic indicators, from currency depreciation to inflation and unemployment. They criticized what they described as a “broken promise” to stabilize the economy, pointing out how small businesses in their constituencies have faced setbacks from rising inflation, a weakened cedi, and burdensome taxes. According to the officials, the prolonged economic downturn has compromised basic living standards, making daily life increasingly unaffordable for ordinary Ghanaians.
Beyond economic grievances, the assembly members emphasized the lack of progress in decentralization efforts, which they say has hampered their ability to bring meaningful development to local communities. “We had hoped for policies that empower local governance,” they noted, expressing disappointment that resources and authority needed for impactful local decision-making have yet to be implemented.
With over two-thirds of Greater Accra’s assembly members supporting Mahama’s candidacy, their endorsement underscores a desire for leadership that prioritizes job creation, local governance, and infrastructure development. Assembly members praised Mahama’s track record, citing his legacy of infrastructural growth and promising a strategic focus on job creation and economic recovery in his 2024 manifesto.
