Diella TekuIn a move to restore order and address critical governance issues, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has announced plans to reconvene Parliament in early November following a petition from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus. This special recall aims to resolve a major impasse that has suspended parliamentary activities since a dispute over majority control escalated.
The current deadlock arose after Speaker Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats vacant, sparking a heated debate between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over which party holds the majority. This majority standoff has stalled legislative operations, impacting the timely review of key policies and national issues.
During a visit from the Council of State, Bagbin underscored his commitment to resolving the standoff through constitutional means, emphasizing the necessity of an impartial Speaker in safeguarding democratic integrity. He assured the Council that his office and parliamentary leadership are coordinating efforts to reinstate order and address the procedural challenges that fuelled the dispute.
The Council welcomed these reassurances, recognizing the urgency of resuming legislative duties and the Speaker’s dedication to maintaining neutrality and upholding democratic values. The reconvened Parliament is expected not only to address immediate governance issues but also to implement procedural reforms aimed at preventing similar conflicts, thereby reinforcing Ghana’s democratic foundation.
