Diella TekuAt a recent campaign event, former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate John Mahama directly challenged President Akufo-Addo’s claim that “Ghanaians are sitting on money but are hungry.” Mahama questioned where this alleged wealth is, pointing to the economic hardships and declining currency value experienced under Akufo-Addo’s administration.
“We don’t have the luxury of experiments after these eight years. The country needs proven experience, not more empty promises,” Mahama stated, highlighting that Akufo-Addo and his Vice President Dr. Bawumia came to power with “sweet words” but failed to deliver. “He said we are sitting on money, so where is the money?” Mahama pressed. He added another pointed question: “Akufo-Addo once criticized me over the cedi-dollar rate, yet today, 1 dollar is 17 cedis. When does he plan to resign?”
Addressing concerns about a fair electoral process, Mahama dismissed Akufo-Addo’s recent remark about not handing over to him, affirming that it’s Ghanaians who hold that decision. He suggested that this resistance stems from the government’s fear of accountability, promising that if elected, his administration would thoroughly investigate officials implicated in corruption.
Mahama’s remarks have intensified discussions around economic management, leadership accountability, and the upcoming election’s stakes, as he continues to press the government on promises and economic realities.
