President Nana Akufo-Addo is set to commission the much-anticipated Flower Pot Interchange on November 19, 2024, marking a significant step forward in easing Accra’s notorious traffic congestion. Part of the larger Tema Motorway Interchange Project, this newly constructed flyover was designed to complement the recently completed underpass, providing alternative routes for north-south traffic flows and streamlining movement along the Spintex Road corridor.

The Flower Pot Interchange Project, announced by the Communications Director of the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, is a major infrastructure upgrade. Extending 800 meters, the flyover begins at the Palace Mall off Spintex Road and connects to Boundary Road in East Legon. Designed to facilitate smoother traffic movement, the interchange includes ramps onto the motorway, enhancements to the Flowerpot roundabout, and improved access through the existing tunnel to East Legon. This complex project, which was contracted to China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Ltd, began in March 2017 and received funding from Afrexim Bank and the Government of Ghana.

The new infrastructure aims to address the increasing demand on the four-lane Tema Motorway, which has struggled with congestion in recent years due to rapid urban growth and increased vehicular traffic. As a long-term solution, the government has also initiated plans to expand the motorway to a 10-lane superhighway, consisting of a central freeway, access-controlled lanes, three urban highways, and pedestrian footbridges for safety. This expansion is expected to create a more efficient transportation network that can better support the city’s economic and social activities.

The commissioning of the Flower Pot Interchange represents a significant achievement for Ghana’s infrastructure development and signals continued investment in projects to address the evolving needs of Accra’s transportation system.
