Diella TekuNational Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to developing key infrastructure to support local artists and content creators. During a meeting with creatives in Kumasi on Tuesday, Mahama emphasized the NDC’s plans to establish a new national theatre in the city—a project aimed at fostering artistic expression and economic growth for creatives in the region.
Mahama highlighted that the NDC first introduced this initiative in its 2020 manifesto, aiming to expand the country’s creative infrastructure beyond Accra and make resources more accessible across Ghana. “Our promise remains steadfast. If elected, we will fulfill our commitment to build Ghana’s second national theatre right here in Kumasi,” Mahama assured attendees. This move, he believes, will decentralize creative resources, providing more opportunities for talent and production houses outside the capital.
The former President also addressed the neglected state of the existing National Theatre in Accra, a cultural landmark built with Chinese support during Jerry Rawlings’s administration. Mahama detailed the facility’s deterioration, noting that the curtains, stage, and various systems are now in disrepair. He promised that the NDC’s agenda includes an extensive modernization of the theatre, with upgrades to create a state-of-the-art hub equipped for diverse artistic performances.
“Our current National Theatre has not seen substantial rehabilitation since its establishment,” Mahama observed. “It’s time to revitalize this space so it can adequately serve our creative talents.”
These planned projects underscore Mahama’s vision for a stronger, more inclusive creative industry, backed by updated facilities that meet international standards and enhance the cultural landscape of Ghana.
