Otto Addo Rallies Behind Black Stars for Crucial AFCON Qualifier Against Angola

Ghana’s Black Stars are gearing up for a do-or-die clash against Angola in Luanda on Friday evening, as coach Otto Addo looks to end a four-game winless streak in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

With just two points from their previous matches, Ghana sits at the bottom of Group F, a precarious position that puts their qualification hopes on the line. A loss to Angola would spell elimination, marking the Black Stars’ first failure to qualify for AFCON since 2004—a blow to a nation with a storied football legacy.

Speaking ahead of the decisive encounter, Addo struck an optimistic tone while acknowledging the gravity of the challenge. “It’s time for our first victory in this competition. I think it’s a great opportunity to keep our chances alive,” he stated.

He emphasized the difficulty of the task, particularly with Angola playing at home at the 11 de Novembro Stadium. “These are difficult games. You can’t take it for granted that they will play at 50 per cent. I know Angola will be 100 per cent ready. It’s going to be very tight, but mentally, the boys are ready.”

The team’s preparations have been hindered by the absence of key players, including Thomas Partey and Inaki Williams. Despite these setbacks, Addo remains confident in the ability of new squad members to rise to the occasion. “The atmosphere is really good. The new players have adapted well and have shown in training that they understand our playing philosophy. It’s a big challenge, but I’m confident they’ll deliver,” he added.

The high-stakes match kicks off at 7 pm local time, with fans and analysts alike closely watching to see if the Black Stars can reignite their qualification campaign and restore hope for a return to Africa’s biggest football stage.
