Diella TekuIn a strategic move to strengthen Ghana’s cultural tourism and bolster local economies, National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the critical role of traditional leaders in promoting the nation’s vibrant festivals. Mahama’s remarks came during a visit to the Ga Mantse’s palace on Thursday, November 28, as part of his Greater Accra regional tour ahead of the December 7 general elections.
Meeting with King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II and the Ga Traditional Council, Mahama expressed profound appreciation for the grand reception accorded him by the Ga Mantse, chiefs, queen mothers, and other dignitaries. He commended their enduring stewardship in preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage and fostering unity within communities.
Reflecting on his visit, Mahama took to his Facebook page to underscore the transformative potential of Ghanaian festivals. “These celebrations are not merely cultural showcases but pivotal economic catalysts,” he noted, advocating for a holistic approach to harnessing festivals as avenues for economic empowerment and global recognition.
Mahama’s vision involves forging robust partnerships with traditional authorities to amplify the visibility and significance of Ghanaian festivals. He pledged to provide the requisite support to ensure these cultural events serve as a platform for tourism development and economic growth, particularly in rural communities where such celebrations often hold deep societal significance.
This commitment, he stated, aligns with the NDC’s broader strategy to integrate culture into the national development agenda. By investing in festivals and their associated industries, Mahama aims to position Ghana as a leading cultural destination, fostering job creation and community revitalization.
Mahama’s outreach to the Ga Traditional Council reflects a broader narrative in his campaign—one that seeks to bridge the gap between governance and cultural leadership to achieve a shared vision of national progress. As the elections draw closer, his engagement with traditional leaders resonates as a reaffirmation of his dedication to preserving Ghana’s heritage while leveraging it as a tool for sustainable development.
