Diella TekuThe Ministry of the Interior has announced a temporary closure of all land borders in Ghana as part of measures to safeguard the integrity and security of the December 7 elections. The closure took immediate effect and will remain in force until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 8, 2024.
In a statement, Interior Minister Henry Quartey emphasized the importance of the directive in ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
“The Ministry urges all citizens and travelers to and from Ghana to cooperate with state security agencies enforcing this directive,” the statement read.
The border closure is part of broader efforts to maintain order during the elections, a critical period for Ghana’s democracy. By temporarily restricting cross-border movement, the government aims to minimize potential disruptions, enhance security, and protect the credibility of the voting process.
The Ministry appealed to citizens and travelers to exercise patience and understanding during the period of restricted movement, highlighting the collective responsibility of all stakeholders to uphold the country’s democratic principles.
State security agencies have been deployed to enforce the directive, ensuring that the closure is implemented smoothly and effectively.
