WAEC Secures Additional GHS35 Million from Education Ministry to Finalize 2024 WASSCE Results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed receiving an additional GHS35 million from the Ministry of Education (MoE), a critical step toward completing the processing of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

This development follows a public back-and-forth between WAEC and the Ministry. The tension began when the Ministry urged WAEC’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) to verify internal facts before making public statements that could mislead stakeholders or undermine the Ministry’s work.

Earlier, Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, assured journalists on December 24, during a visit to WAEC’s offices, that the results would be released by December 29. He noted that the marking process was nearly complete, with efforts underway to meet the timeline.

WAEC, however, challenged this assertion, particularly claims about an additional release of GHS25 million. The Council initially cast doubt on its ability to meet the December 29 deadline without adequate funding.

In a statement issued on December 26, the Ministry clarified that WAEC had acknowledged receiving GHS25 million on December 20 but had also requested an additional GHS35 million to expedite results processing. The Ministry honoured this request, and WAEC confirmed receipt of the funds on December 25.

John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, stated on December 27 that the additional funds would enable the Council to complete the scanning of objective answer sheets and finalize the processing of results.

“We are working round the clock to ensure the results are released by the end of the month,” Kapi assured stakeholders, while also appealing for the release of the remaining funds needed to pay supervisors, invigilators, script checkers, and suppliers of examination materials.

The recent financial boost has been a relief for WAEC, but challenges remain. The Council reiterated its commitment to meeting its mandate despite financial constraints, emphasizing the need for the MoE to release the outstanding balance to clear other obligations.

As students, parents, and schools eagerly await the results, WAEC assured stakeholders of its dedication to delivering the results on time. “We extend our best wishes for the season and remain committed to the execution of our responsibilities,” Kapi concluded.

This development underscores the critical role of financial collaboration between WAEC and the Ministry of Education in ensuring the smooth execution of national examinations and timely dissemination of results.
