FrimpongThe Committee charged with Investigating issues with regards to the death of a final year student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Senior High School has completed its work and has handed the report over the Ghana Education Service in the Ashanti Region.
The Report was submitted on July, 24 by the Chairman of the Committee Prof Francis Kofi Ampong.
Other members of the Committee are: Dr. Kwaku Baah Benjamin, a representative from the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), Oforikrom Municipal Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Kingsley Osei-Kwakye and a representative from the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Francis Kwadwo Kusi, Oforikrom Municipal Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dorothy Opare Baidu, a representative from the Teacher Union, Peter Boateng, and a representative of the Regional Director of Education, Stephen Ofori.
The Committee which was constituted by the Ghana Education Service was tasked to finish its work within two weeks.
It was tasked to investigate issues surrounding the sudden death of Sam Leonard and also give the students the platform to air their grievances.
During the period, the committee interviewed students, and parents of the deceased student to gather more information on the incident. It also perused the autopsy report of the deceased student submitted by medics to aid in their investigations.
Presenting the report to the Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service in the Ashanti Region, Mrs. Mary Owusu Achiaw leader of the Committee Prof Francis Kofi Ampong indicated that he could not disclose the content to the media.
However, he was optimistic that the recommendations will be implemented by the Ghana Education Service.
The Reported is expected to be forwarded to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service who will sanction for its implementation.
Background
On July 14, Sam Leonard met his untimely death after he was receiving treatment at a health facility.
His death brought about students rioting because to them, his death could have been avoided if the school authorities hadn’t been negligent.
The Headmistress of the school, the Senior Housemaster and Anthony Awotwe, a housemaster for the Densu House, where the deceased student resided, were also asked to step aside for investigations to proceed.
