The International Criminal Court (ICC) has upheld the acquittal of Ivory Coast’s former President Laurent Gbagbo, who had been accused of crimes against humanity.

The first head of state to stand trial at the ICC, Mr Gbagbo had been cleared of charges in connection with post-electoral violence in the West African nation more than a decade ago.

But the prosecution had appealed against the decision, arguing that, despite procedural errors, Mr Gbagbo’s guilt had been proved beyond reasonable doubt.

This paves the way after a decade for his return to Ivory Coast, where he remains an influential figure.
