Azugu again? Ghanaians ask as they react to the arrest of Citi FM’s journalists.

The Ghana Police Service is made up of some fine gentlemen who do their work with diligence and professionalism. These crop of service men do not appear in the news, when they do, it would be for a good reason or some commendations for a professional discharge of their duty.

There are the notorious ones. Those who, for some reasons, keep attracting bad press in every operation they lead. Once you hear them for a bad conduct, you should be rest assured that they will repeat break their record, for even worse reason again.

Such is becoming the story of the Commander of the National Security SWAT team, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Samuel Kojo Azugu. His name become synonymous to misuse of police power and the lack of tact during the Ayawaso West Wagon constituency by-election shooting.

The incident led to the setting up of the Emile Short Commission to investigate the violence that left several people injured in the by-election. When DSP Azugu appeared to testify before the committee, it became clear he had led a disaster of an operation. That was in 2019.

Little or nothing was heard of the Commander again to the extent that, there had been an assumption, he might have been sanctioned.

Yesterday, his name appeared in a news that is trending currently. The despotic raid and arrest of Citi Fm’s journalists. One, Kaled Kudah who was arrested at the National Security premises, the other, Zoe Abu Baido, arrested at the premises of the radio station. A force of action many have condemned as being disproportionately applied.

On giving an account of the whole confusion to the media by the station’s General Manager, suddenly, to the shock of many listeners, the name AZUGU get mentioned. Azugu again!? Many exclaimed.

Apparently, he is the one commanding the Rambo style arrest of this harmless female journalist. Seven heavily built men in uniform, fully armed, stormed the station just to take away the young girl.

Ironically, many understood what happened when they released it was conducted by DSP Azugu. That is his handy world.

The Ghana Police Service has a long-running battle in the effort to restore the good name of the service. Their effort is achieving less result simply because the rot is right at the top. High ranking officials are part of the bad nuts, hence correcting the service is difficult.
