The governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) has given the strongest indications that it will name the much-touted Pokuase interchange in the Greater Accra Region after the sitting president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his efforts in building one of the finest interchanges in the country.

The interchange which is being inaugurated today by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo thus will be known as Nana Akufo-Addo Four-Tier Interchange.

A former NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayensuano Constituency in the Eastern Region and former Chairman of the Parliamentary  Select-Committee on Roads and Highways, Samuel Ayeh- Paye made this disclosure speaking in an interview on Accra-based Neat FM’s morning show hosted by Mark Jerry Osei Agyemang on the inauguration of the interchange.

He said the president deserves to have his name inscribed on the interchange because of the roles he(the president) played in having the interchange built in the country.

He added that the four-tier interchange at Pokuase is the second in Africa after South Africa’s.

And the first in West Africa beating the likes of Nigeria to it, he explained.

He said the interchange which was a three-tier had to be redesigned by the NPP government after it secured funding from the African Development Bank(ADB).

He noted that the interchange was the first phase of roads construction embarked on the former President John Agyekum Kufour’s administration.

According to him, the construction of the interchange was part of the second phase of roads construction which could not come on because the NPP lost power to the National Democratic Congress(NDC) in 2008.

He said the when NDC to power in 2009, it could not raise the needed funds for the construction of the interchange because of the bad economic management practice on the part of the NDC’s administration.

He noted that the ADB refused to advance the loan to the then NDC government because of the government decision to seek policy credibility from the International Monetary Fund(IMF), it was the Nana Addo-led administration that renegotiated the loan for the ADB to make funds available for the project.

This is indicative of the role played by the president in the construction of the four-tier interchange.
