Mahama’s running mate will be an Akan – Victor Smith

Ghana’s former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom has hinted that ex-president John Dramani Mahama’s running mate will be an Akan.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News, the NDC stalwart revealed that since the Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, is from a minority ethnic group in Ghana, he is sure the flagbearer will pick an Akan to complement his chances of winning the 2020 elections.

“It takes to be controversial when you drop any hint. It just happens that our flagbearer is from the Northern Region. I think looking at the political history of our country, we’ve so far had a situation where no two minority ethnic groups have formed the ticket. So I think it may be [that] since president Mahama comes from a minority ethnic group vis-a-vis the Akan population, ideally, I think the person might be an Akan,” he hinted.

The question of who partners John Dramani Mahama as election draws closer has been on the lips of many, with rumours and speculations going round over who is the suitable candidate for the NDC flagbearer.

A month ago, the party’s Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi announced that Mahama will announce his running mate in March. It’s the fourth week in March and nothing has been heard from the party’s flagbearer as to who partners him for the December 2020 contest.
