Ghana’s Environment Minister Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie had advised the Akufo Addo to impose a ban on the wrapping of food in plastic as it has health implications on the populace.

At the national launch of the Plastic Waste Management Campaign at Abetifi in the Eastern Region, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie revealed how harmful this practice is to the health of both men and women.

According to him, wrapping food in plastic rubbers affects menstruation among women and also reduces sperm production among men.

“The binding substance sometimes leaches into our body and destroy the internal functions. As a doctor I know that. If you are a female, the plastic chemical composite shape is the same structure as part of your hormones and it can disrupt your menstrual cycle and cause problems,” he said.

“If you are a male, it can also enter the system and interfere with Spermatogenises. Because it is chronic in nature, it happens small, small, so you might not appreciate it.” – he added.

The Minister in his speech urged MMDAs to ban kenkey sellers from using plastic to wrap kenkey before boiling as one of the main causes of the problems stated above.
