The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) elections set for today, Tuesday, August 8, 2023, have been halted by an interlocutory order issued by an Accra High Court.
The elections will be postponed until the case is resolved by the court.
Plaintiffs in the legal action, Doe Kwablah Seyenam Nyamadi and Frederick Van Dyk, both MUSIGA members, have asked the court for an interlocutory injunction to prevent MUSIGA (the first defendant), Obour (the second defendant), and the Electoral Commission (the third defendant) from holding the elections.
The plaintiffs argue in their application that the first and second defendants, as well as their officials, have failed to produce adequate accounts in violation of the MUSIGA Constitution.
They further argue that by failing to deliver accounts, the defendants are ineligible to hold elections and transfer over power to a new administration.
The third defendant is a statutory body in charge of elections.
MUSIGA’s elections have been postponed multiple times since 2019, when Bice Osei Kuffour aka ‘Obour’ concluded his term as president.
There had been problems with the voter registration update and misunderstanding over the eligibility of delegates.
Bessa Simons, the union’s interim president, has been in office for the previous four years.
