President-elect John Dramani Mahama has committed to ushering in a transformative era for Ghana’s youth following his decisive victory in the December 7 general elections. With 6,328,397 votes (56.55% of the valid ballots), Mahama triumphed over his closest challenger, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who secured 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).
In an interview with DW TV monitored by Adwoaadubianews.com, on December 16, Mahama described the youth as the cornerstone of Ghana’s progress, emphasizing their energy and expectations as a driving force behind his campaign and upcoming presidency. “The faces of the young people I saw at all the rallies and their high expectations in our government humble me. It is a clear reminder to give my utmost effort to turn this country around and create a better future for our young people,” Mahama said.
Mahama has dubbed his vision for the nation a “reset for Ghana,” a call to action aimed at revitalizing the economy, fostering inclusivity, and creating opportunities for the country’s youth to realize their potential. He acknowledged the prevailing sense of hopelessness among many young Ghanaians, noting that a lack of opportunities continues to hinder their ambitions despite their talents and hard work.
“Our young people are filled with potential, but they face barriers that prevent them from thriving. We need to create an environment that allows every young Ghanaian—regardless of their background—to dream big and succeed,” he stated.
Throughout his campaign, Mahama frequently engaged with young people across the country, witnessing firsthand their determination and resilience. These interactions, he said, shaped his resolve to prioritize youth-focused policies, including job creation, access to quality education, and support for entrepreneurship.
Mahama’s victory is seen as a mandate for change, with voters signaling a desire for a leader who will address systemic challenges and rebuild trust in governance. As he prepares to take office, the president-elect has assured the nation that his administration will focus on creating a Ghana where the youth are empowered to be active participants in shaping the country’s future.
“We need to hit the reset button and provide the foundation for young Ghanaians to not only hope but to thrive in a society that values their contributions and invests in their growth,” Mahama concluded.
