Eyewitnesses described the robbers’ swift and aggressive approach as they closed in on the vehicle, guns drawn. They immediately began firing shots into the air to disperse the crowd, sending shoppers and vendors scrambling for cover behind stalls, ducking and fleeing to avoid the gunfire echoing through the marketplace.
The assailants forcefully entered the Toyota Corolla, where large sacks of cash had been stored. In a matter of minutes, they transferred the money into their own getaway vehicle, a Rav 4, while continuing to fire shots to keep bystanders at bay. According to one witness, “We deal in gold here, and when we heard the loud noise, we realized it was sporadic shooting. We hid and locked our gate. They didn’t reach us, but we heard them shouting to ‘open the boot’ and saw them loading bags of money from the shops.”
Another witness, detailing the attack, added, “Several gold dealers operate here. The owner of one shop had just arrived with bags of cash in his car. The robbers closed in on him as soon as he parked, took the money, and fled. This is the second time such an incident has happened here. The police arrived too late; by then, the robbers had already escaped in the Rav 4. They fired many shots, even threw some money in the air to distract onlookers and scare them off.”
Footage recorded by witnesses shows the robbers’ coordinated, quick movements and the terror that rippled through the market. The video soon circulated on social media, intensifying public concern over security in the area.
The Ghana Police Service is yet to confirm all details of the robbery, but they have launched an active search for the suspects. The attack occurred just hours after another high-profile robbery at a nearby jewellery shop, with over GH¢6 million reportedly stolen and another individual injured.
CCTV footage from the scene has surfaced, capturing the moments leading up to the heist. The police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward as they work to bring the perpetrators to justice.
