Former President of the Republic of Ghana and flagbearer for NDC, Mr. John Mahama has said President Nana Akufo-Addo’s bag of achievements is full of toilet facilities.
“If he [Nana Akufo-Addo] mentions that he has done so much, he should unbundle the infrastructure and allow us to see the projects one by one”, the presidential candidate of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) said in an interview with Abusua FM in Kumasi, adding: “They are full of small small toilet facilities”.
“And I got somewhere and realised that the association of contractors building these toilet facilities had not even been paid. Over 539 of them were complaining,” he noted.
In August this year, President Nana Akufo-Addo said his government has constructed the largest number of toilets in Ghana than any government in the history of the 4th Republic.
According to the NPP, under the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Water and Sanitation Project, 27,242 households and 238 institutional toilets have been constructed while under the Sustainable and Rural Water and Sanitation project, 12,972 household toilets have been constructed.
The party noted that, as a result, 351 communities have attained Open Defecation-Free (ODF) status.
These were contained in the NPP’s 2020 manifesto launched in Cape Coast, Central Region.
In June this year, President Akufo-Addo said his government is pursuing an infrastructure-for-all agenda throughout the whole country, rather than concentrating them in the big cities.
“We have been busy in the delivery of physical infrastructure as well, and I am happy to report that, after just three-and-a-half years in office, I can say, without any fear of contradiction, that every constituency in this country has seen the provision of some basic infrastructure to their communities”, the President said at a ceremony to acclaim him as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Saturday, 27 June 2020.
“In other words, we have not limited the construction and building of infrastructure to the cities, but our towns and villages are seeing development as well, because we do not believe in leaving any community out of the development programme of Ghana”, he said.
He added: “The provision of water, toilets, warehouses to store agricultural produce are all helping to improve the look of the rural areas of our country”.
President Akufo-Addo said his government has “not stopped” its ‘water-for-all’ and ‘toilet-for-all’ agenda, adding: “We are pursuing an ‘infrastructure-for-all’ [agenda]”.
“Our approach is different”, Mr Akufo-Addo said, adding: “We owe it to Ghana to be different”.
“The huge investments we are making in agriculture mean Ghana will soon be a self-sufficient nation in food production”, the President asserted.
