FrimpongThe people of Asuofiri and Esereso in the Wenchi Municipality went agog when for the first time, their communities have been connected to the national grid.
The whole community folks including the Chiefs and Opinion Leaders jumped into jubilation and dancing amidst discotheque and fanfare when the lights were turned on.
The Unit Committee Chair and member of the Clergy and Council of Chiefs Nana Opanyin Antwi Anthony who spoke on behalf of the Chiefs and people said words could not describe their joy after decades of hunger and thirst for electricity.
He assured the NPP government of their votes in the upcoming 2020 general elections as appreciation. He further appealed for Korfoso – Boffour roads to connect Sunyani.
The Assembly Member for the area Mustapha Musah could not hide his joy saying it was a new day in their lives.
The project was a fully sponsored government of Ghana Self Help Electrification Project (SHEP) initiated by the Ministry of Energy through the lobby of the MP and Minister for Planning Prof George Gyan-Baffour and the MCE with Municipal Assembly.
Commissioning the project, the Municipal Chief Executive noted that the project, in fulfilment of government’s promise, was re-arward by the NPP government in 2017 after it was began in 2013 and later abandoned by the NDC administration.
Dr Prince Kwakye Afriyie debunked assertions that the electricity project was carried out and funded by a private individual. He challenged any philanthropist who claims credit for it to present documentary proof for public commendation.
The MCE applauded the youth as volunteers for erecting over 76 electricity poles from the grid source to the community to realise the project. He disclosed that a Junior High School block under construction at Asuofiri was one of the twenty-two (22) Middle Belt Development projects dotted across the length and breadth of the Municipality under the One Constituency One Million Dollars also lobbied by the MP. Subinso I, Subinso II, Branam, Abotareye, Asuogya, Buoku, amongst others, would benefit from toilet, classrooms, Durbar ground facilities separately.
He donated Public Protection Equipment (PPEs) thus Veronica Buckets, Hand Sanitizers, Liquid soap, Tissues, etc to the Asuofiri, Esereso and some adjoining communities with MP’s support to help the fight against Coronavirus.
The Area Supervisor Joseph Akwei of NEDCo/VRA educated the people on how to save energy and cautioned them against illegal connections. He urged them to inform his outfit on any fault for repairs to avoid all risks.
