Speaking in a recent interview, Mensah, who shared the pitch with Essien during their youth days with the Black Starlets, reminisced about their bond that began in secondary school. Beyond football, he highlighted Essien’s unmatched generosity and humility.
“Michael Essien has been more than just a friend to me. He’s been a guardian angel, always willing to lend a helping hand. If I have any property today, I owe it all to Michael Essien.”
Mensah revealed that Essien sponsored his coaching courses in England, an investment that has been pivotal in shaping his coaching journey: “He paid a significant amount of money for me to pursue my coaching dreams in Europe. I don’t think any family member would do what Essien has done for me.”
Michael Essien’s contributions to football transcend his illustrious playing career, which includes winning two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and a UEFA Champions League with Chelsea. On the international stage, Essien earned 58 caps and scored 9 goals for Ghana, solidifying his reputation as one of the nation’s greatest football icons.
Since retiring, Essien has transitioned seamlessly into coaching, earning his UEFA coaching license and currently serving as part of the coaching staff at FC Nordsjælland in Denmark. His mentorship of young coaches like Mensah underscores his commitment to nurturing the next generation of football talent.
