Twenty fighters aligned to the Boko Haram insurgency group have been killed in a battle with the Nigerian Army in Baga, a small town in Borno State, north-eastern Nigeria.

The commander in charge of media relations, Major General John Enenche confirmed this in a statement released to the Nigerian press.

He said troops undertook the major offensive operation with the support of the Nigerian Army Super Camp in Baga, against the insurgents.

He added that those killed were armed with mortars, rocket-propelled grenades, and small weapons. The terrorists were a route to attack surrounding villages when they got ambushed by the army.

Fortunately, no Nigerian soldier died in the battle. However, nine soldiers were wounded in the operation and have transported to the hospital for treatment.

Boko Haram has waged a decades-old insurgency against Nigeria in a bid to institutionalize Islam as a state religion.

They also want the country to throw away its democratic dispensation and sharia law in accordance with Islamic principles. The war has killed tens of thousands of civilians.
