Diella TekuA mini-rally in Agona Swedru turned chaotic when a gunshot wounded a campaign team manager and left several others with minor injuries during an unexpected clash between supporters of parliamentary candidate Chris Arthur and those of incumbent MP Cynthia Morrison. The incident, which reportedly occurred while Arthur’s team was en route from a campaign launch in Otinkorang, has raised concerns over rising political tensions in the Agona West area.
Eyewitnesses say that as Arthur’s supporters attempted to pass through a crowd of Morrison’s supporters at Agona Nyankrom, the atmosphere grew tense, leading to an exchange that escalated when a firearm was discharged. Haruna Rashid, Chris Arthur’s campaign manager, suffered gunshot wounds to his ribs and was immediately transported to Accra for medical attention.
Jibril Tanko, chairman of the NPP Agona West constituency, recounted the chaotic scene, describing how the charged environment led to violence. “We were simply returning from a tour, and as we tried passing through, Morrison’s supporters started attacking us,” Tanko stated. “The unfortunate firing happened, injuring our campaign manager.”
Amidst this, other supporters were also injured in the chaos and were taken to Agona Swedru Government Hospital for treatment.
The incident has been reported to local police, who are investigating to identify and apprehend the person responsible.
