Teams in last eight
Champions League first-leg quarters take centre stage this week. Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Benfica, Manchester City, Villarreal, and Bayern Munich are the eight teams in the quarter-finals.
Here is what you need to know regarding the upcoming fixtures.
Villarreal vs Bayern Munich
This is Villarreal’s first game at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League since April 2009, when they were eliminated over two legs by Arsenal. Overall, they have only won one of their six games in the competition at this stage or later (D2 L3) – 1-0 against Inter Milan in April 2006.
Manchester City vs Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid won 1-0 against Manchester United in March, eliminating the Red Devils from this season’s competition. Should they win this game, it will be the first time they have won on consecutive away trips against English teams in European competition.
Benfica vs Liverpool
Benfica have only won one of their last six home games against English sides in European competitions, drawing three and losing two, with that lone victory coming against Newcastle in the UEFA Europa League in April 2013. In the Champions League, they’re winless in their last four home games against English sides, drawing once and losing three, since beating Liverpool in February 2006.
Chelsea vs Real Madrid
This is the second consecutive season in which Chelsea and Real Madrid have met in the knockout stages of the Champions League. The Blues could become the first English team to eliminate them from the knockout stages of the competition on multiple occasions, having beaten them 3-1 on aggregate in last season’s semi-final.
