COVID-19: Ken Agyapong goes into 3-week self-quarantine

Outspoken Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong says he is observing a 3-week quarantine to protect himself from contracting the novel coronavirus that has killed three people in the country.

Speaking on Net2 TV, the maverick MP said the self-quarantine he is embarking on is due to the increasing number of cases recorded in the country within a short span and also sticking to the calls of Ghana Medical Association to lock down the country.

Making reference to the Bible of how people locked themselves up in a room to prevent dying from a plague, the Asin Central legislator says though he does not attend church, he is going to resort to the doctrine of ‘self-quarantine’ as espoused in the bible.

“I want to appeal to Ghanaians that I’m going to pause from today and go for three weeks quarantine…Isaiah 26:20 states that during the plague, everyone was told to go inside and lock their doors until the sickness of death goes away. In a way, it means let us quarantine ourselves for two to three weeks. Ghanaians must be serious with this. I’m even paranoid. Even when I get a headache, I check my temperature so I’m going to quarantine myself for two or three weeks and see what happens,” he said.

Moreover, he says calls by the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) for a lockdown of the country must be fully accepted by all even as he pleaded with government to heed to the association’s suggestion.

According to him, he totally supports the idea of a lockdown and warned Ghanaians of the repercussions should government ignore calls by the GMA.

“We’re also pleading with President, Ghanaians let’s understand the idea for a lockdown. I don’t know if you have listened or read the GMA press release. I support them 100 percent.”

Explaining his reasons for supporting GMA, Kennedy Agyapong said, “…people say how can we go into a lockdown for three weeks in Ghana? My fellow Ghanaians, there will be lots of consequences if we don’t stop all activities. See what is happening to countries with money, they are unable to do anything about it. Compare it to ours, ours is serious. What makes ours more serious is our way of living, attitude, culture and how we’re always together especially in trotros and taxis. I plead with Ghanaians to take it serious and support GMA 100 percent for the president to give a lockdown for 3 weeks so we can contain the virus.”

He further advised Ghanaians to reduce traveling and stay home often to prevent the rapid spread of the coronavirus.

Currently, 132 persons in the country have contracted COVID-19. 78 of the infected patients are travelers who are under mandatory quarantine, while the 54 cases including 3 deaths came from the regular surveillance systems.

The Ghana Health Service has however revealed that 51 persons are well and are awaiting their test results and will be discharged when the results are negative. 14 people are also being managed at home and the rest are responding to treatment on admission in isolation.
