Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has outlined an ambitious plan to combat corruption in Ghana, emphasizing the transformative role of digital systems and blockchain technology.

Speaking to Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Accra on Wednesday night, Dr. Bawumia pledged to tackle entrenched corruption by implementing innovative digital solutions to ensure transparency and accountability in governance.

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Dr. Bawumia stressed the importance of collaboration with CSOs to combat corruption effectively.

“The fight against corruption is a fight against the status quo, and many entrenched interests benefit from it,” he stated. “We will need the strong backing of CSOs to take on these interests and prioritize the nation’s welfare over the gains of a few.”

Dr. Bawumia explained that corruption thrives in opaque systems, and dismantling these requires determination and collective effort.

Central to his anti-corruption strategy is leveraging digitalization to create transparent, traceable government systems.

“Digitalization ensures greater transparency,” Dr. Bawumia noted. “I envision a government where every transaction is traceable and cannot be erased. This level of transparency will significantly reduce opportunities for corruption.”

He highlighted blockchain technology as a key component of his strategy, pointing to its successful implementation in countries like the UAE.

“I want Ghana to lead Africa in adopting blockchain technology for governance. This will revolutionize our e-government system and make corruption far more difficult to sustain.”

The Civil Society Organizations welcomed Dr. Bawumia’s vision, praising his commitment to innovative solutions in the fight against corruption. They expressed readiness to collaborate with his administration should he be elected President.

Dr. Bawumia’s pledge to champion transparency through technology underscores his broader commitment to modernization and accountability in governance, signaling a potential shift in Ghana’s approach to combating corruption.
