The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has called on political stakeholders and citizens to remain patient as the verification and collation of election results continue. This appeal comes just 23 hours after polls closed nationwide for the presidential and parliamentary elections.

Addressing the public at a press conference on Sunday, December 8, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa reassured Ghanaians of the commission’s commitment to delivering accurate and transparent election results within its mandated 72-hour timeframe.

“We ask citizens to exercise patience; it has only been 23 hours since the polls closed. The process is detailed, involving the active participation of political party agents and observers at every stage. If the results are ready before 72 hours, we will not hesitate to announce them,” said Jean Mensa.

This statement followed comments from National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who urged the EC to expedite the declaration of results. His call came after New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia reportedly conceded defeat in the race.

Jean Mensa clarified that the EC is currently working with verified results from the Ahafo Region and is steadily processing results from other regions. She emphasized that the delay is a necessary measure to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

“The EC is committed to ensuring that every vote is accounted for, and the outcome reflects the will of the people. This meticulous approach is essential for maintaining the trust of all stakeholders,” she added.

The EC’s appeal highlights the importance of patience and cooperation as the commission performs its constitutional duty to oversee free, fair, and credible elections. Political parties, candidates, and the public are urged to support the process and await the official announcement of results.
