Parliament has approved a budget of over GHC 390 million for the Electoral Commission to conduct the voter registration exercise prior to the December 2020 general elections.

The said amount will be expended on procurement, recruitment, training, data processing, publicity and allowances.

Over GHC161 million is expected to be spent on allowances of registration officials while the procurement of materials is expected to cost over GHC 156 million.

The total budget approved for the Commission’s activities this year is GHC1.3 billion, which is a reduction of the GHC 1.8 billion approved in 2016.

The registration exercise will take place from April and May 2020 and will last for 50 days.

The Electoral Commission has stated that it is being financially prudent with the decision to compile a new voters’ register following some opposition parties’ resistance to the decision.
