Ghana has reported 4,155 suspected cases of cholera since October 2024, with 35 fatalities recorded as of December 23, according to Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye, Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

The Western Region has been hardest hit, accounting for 17 deaths. In response, the GHS launched a targeted oral cholera vaccination campaign in high-risk areas between November 30 and December 19, 2024. The campaign focused on hotspots including Awutu Senya East, Ahanta West, Effia-Kwesimintim, Sekondi-Takoradi, and Shama metro/municipals.

“A total of 662,906 people were vaccinated out of 792,482 eligible individuals,” Dr. Aboagye reported. The intervention has shown promising results, as districts like Awutu Senya East have not reported any confirmed cases since the campaign.

As the Christmas season approaches, Dr. Aboagye called on the public to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures. He encouraged anyone experiencing diarrhea or vomiting to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility.

To curb the spread of cholera, he advised citizens to prioritize hygiene:

  • Drink potable water.
  • Consume thoroughly cooked and hot food.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables before eating.
  • Wash hands with soap under running water before preparing or eating food, after visiting the toilet, or after touching potentially contaminated surfaces.

The GHS remains committed to containing the outbreak and protecting public health, urging Ghanaians to adhere to these safety guidelines to ensure a healthy and safe holiday season.
