The Ghana Police Service has announced that it has put in place comprehensive security measures ahead of a planned protest by Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey. The group, which seeks to raise awareness and push for action against illegal mining (locally known as “galamsey”), will hold a three-day procession from Okponglo, Legon, to Independence Square from October 3rd to 5th, 2024.

In a formal notice issued on September 26th, 2024, the group informed the police of their planned protest, which led to an engagement between both parties to ensure a peaceful and orderly demonstration. After discussions, the police and organizers agreed on specific routes that the procession will take, starting from Okponglo near the University of Ghana Sports Stadium and passing through major landmarks, including the Electoral Commission Office, Parliament House, and the AU Roundabout. The demonstration will conclude at the Accra Sports Stadium car park.

During the meeting, the police reminded the organizers of their obligations under the Public Order Act. This includes ensuring participants conduct themselves responsibly and are held liable for any damage to public property during the event. Organizers were also reminded of the need to maintain order, avoid obstructing traffic, and ensure that participants comply with police directives.

In turn, the police emphasized their role in maintaining public safety during the protest, including managing traffic flow, dispersing crowds if necessary to prevent violence, and closing off streets when required to preserve public order.

The Ghana Police Service has reassured the public that adequate security personnel and resources have been allocated to ensure the peaceful conduct of the protest and to protect both participants and the general public.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, stated, “We have taken all necessary steps to safeguard the rights of the protesters while ensuring public safety. The public can be assured of peace and security during the event and beyond.”

As the demonstration approaches, the public is urged to cooperate with the police and avoid activities that may disrupt the peaceful conduct of the event. The protest is expected to draw attention to the harmful impacts of illegal mining on the environment and communities across Ghana.
