Diella TekuAkua Donkor, the dynamic founder of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), passed away at Accra’s Ridge Hospital on Monday, October 28, marking a poignant end to her vibrant political journey. Her family confirmed her passing to Citi FM, though the exact circumstances remain private.
A true pioneer in Ghanaian politics, Akua Donkor rose from humble beginnings to become an influential figure, tirelessly championing the causes of farmers and women. Known for her bold spirit and unwavering commitment, she inspired a grassroots following and brought a unique voice to Ghana’s political landscape. Her relentless advocacy led her to contest the presidency multiple times, a testament to her dedication despite limited resources and significant obstacles.
Akua Donkor’s political journey began in Herman, where she served as an Assemblywoman. Her first presidential run in 2012, as an independent candidate, was cut short when she was disqualified by the Electoral Commission, a decision she met with resilience rather than legal challenge, opting to support Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party. Her resolve saw her try again in 2016, only to face another setback as her party’s headquarters in Kabu, Eastern Region, was tragically destroyed by fire.
Undeterred, Donkor continued to champion her beliefs, ultimately securing a place on the ballot as a candidate in the 2024 presidential election. Her passing leaves a void in Ghanaian politics and marks the end of a chapter defined by passionate advocacy and unshakeable determination. Akua Donkor will be remembered as a trailblazer who fought for the underrepresented and brought a bold voice to Ghana’s political discourse.
