Government has no budget for stranded Ghanaians abroad-Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey

Stranded Ghanaians abroad to be evacuated will pay for their evacuation cost. This is because the Government of Ghana has no budget for covering the expenses of the evacuation.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey who disclosed this on the floor of Paliament said the cost comprises their tickets and more and “only capable Ghanaians will be subjected to other conditions such as permit, over flight, landing clearance.”

President Akufo Addo gave the greenlight for stranded Ghanaians abroad to be evacuated home, in his tenth address to the nation on the COVIDID-19 measures, saying, “special dispensation is going to be given for their evacuation back to Ghana.”

Hon Ayorkor  Botchwey explained to the house that evacuated Ghanaians will be quarantined for two weeks when the get into the country and will only be “released to join their families after retesting negative. Those who will unfortunately test positive will be moved to the isolation centers and monitored until their recovery.

Madam Ayorkor Botchwey answering some more questions on the floor added that the committee of foreign affairs have agreed on some measures to ensure the success of the evacuation of stranded Ghanaians safely.

More Ghanaians who have become stranded across the world due to COVID-19 border closures are expected to be evacuated in the coming weeks.
