Black Star’s general captain , Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he regrets playing for the national team in the 2008 African Cup of Nations because it made him lose a Manchester City deal.

Asamoah Gyan in an interview with Kwabena Yeboah on GTV’s Sports Highlights show indicated that his underperformance in the 2008 AFCON game was due to injury, a situation many people knew about but failed to take into consideration.

According to him, he was criticised by Ghanaians for failure to bring out his best in the tournament, which made his family suffer an attack at home from football fans despite all the sacrifices made.

“I regret playing at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations because I was injured but I felt I needed to sacrifice but yet I was criticized. I really regret playing in the tournament, because even after that I had to go out for five months. I was supposed to sign for Manchester City but I missed. That has been one of my biggest regrets with the national team,”

Asamoah Gyan scored just one goal at the 2008 AFCON tournament; a penalty in the opener against Guinea.
