Diella TekuAmid renewed tensions in Bawku and escalating violence along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway, the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Armed Forces have assured citizens of comprehensive measures to protect communities and travelers.
The unrest, rooted in a protracted chieftaincy dispute, resurfaced when Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief previously in exile, returned to Bawku, sparking violent clashes between factions. The resurgence of conflict has resulted in tragic loss of life and heightened tensions, leading armed groups to set up roadblocks along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway, with recent ambushes claiming eight lives and damaging several vehicles.
In response, security agencies have deployed a substantial joint police and military force to affected areas, bolstering their presence in Bawku and along the crucial highway. Their efforts are focused on de-escalating tensions, ensuring safe travel, and managing regional stability, especially around high-risk areas like Gbimsi.
Through a public statement, the Ghana Police Service emphasized that the enhanced security presence is intended to prevent further violence, protect travelers, and maintain public order. They called for calm and reassured the public that restoring peace and safeguarding lives remain their highest priorities as they work to bring stability back to the region.
