A Life of Groundbreaking Work

John Amos was more than just an actor—he was a trailblazer. Beginning his career as a professional football player, Amos transitioned into acting, leaving an indelible mark on groundbreaking 1970s TV shows like Good Times and the acclaimed miniseries Roots.

Known for his fearless stand against the stereotypical portrayal of Black characters in Hollywood, Amos risked his career to demand better representation and authentic stories for Black audiences.

Before finding fame, Amos worked various jobs, from ditch-digging and lumberjacking to managing a restaurant and writing advertising copy. It was his talent for writing jokes and performing in nightclubs that eventually led him to the world of acting.
