FrimpongFormer International Boxing Federation (IBF) Richard Commey, has said but for boxing, he will have been the best left-back footballer ever in Ghana.
Commey told wwww.sportsnetgh.com in an exclusive interview that he was once a great footballer and engaged in a number of community matches before turning to boxing.
He noted that the person who introduced him to boxing saw him playing football and got impressed with his stamina and asked him to shift to boxing.
“I would have been a footballer and play to the highest level because I was a regular player and very talented and could have gone very far with football,” he added.
Commey, who was also once a kickboxer said, football was his first passion and boasted that, he was better than any boxer who has ever played football in Ghana.
Whilst preparing to make a return to the ring, Commey noted that Ghana has a lot of talents in boxing but they can only be developed with the right investments by corporate bodies and the government.
“We have the talents and young people with the interest to venture into boxing but without the right investments, they would not be able to venture into the sport thereby denying the nation of future world champions.
“The Bukom Boxing Arena is a perfect example of investment in boxing. It is nice and has the needed equipment but we need more to produce quality boxers for the country.
“Countries like Ukraine and Russia have invested hugely in boxing and that is why their boxers are making waves on the international scene.
“Vasyl Lomachenko had three Olympic medals to his credit before turning a professional boxer and you can see his performance on the world stage. This is the type of investments we need in our game,” Commey noted.
