The private plane used by President on his travels in the past few days has generated so much controversy. Yesterday, Okudzeto Ablakwa revealed that President Akufo-Addo used a plane that charges 15,000 Pounds an hour. This meant that the President who used that plane for 23 hours had incurred a little above GHS 2.7 million in a day. This revelation drew a host of reactions among Ghanaians.
Today, Friday, May 28, 2021, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, a Deputy Communications Minister during the erstwhile Mahama government bemoaned the expenses being incurred by the President especially at a time when Ghanaians are being made to pay Draconian taxes. He noted that he was not against the president travelling but rather the cost could have been reduced.
“Presidents have come and gone and they did not behave like this. This is unacceptable. The president of Ghana must go for a jet that reflects our economic status. I have been with President Mahama when he flew from Frankfurt to Accra. At that time, he could have opted for an expensive one but the aircraft was an economy one. He sat in an Economy Class plane and came to Ghana. This did not diminish his standing. He didn’t make him feel less presidential than Akufo-Addo. Why must our president do that?
There was another one Akufo-Addo did that cost 17,000 an hour where he flew to Madrid to watch a Champions League final between Tottenham and Liverpool. That is an unacceptable waste. It has been 2 years and basic schools have no text books. There are few ICU beds in Ghana. This is a waste” Felix Kwakye said.
