Diella TekuJohn Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has vowed to prioritize the rehabilitation and construction of markets in Ghana’s border towns if elected in the December 7 general elections. This initiative is a cornerstone of his strategy to enhance cross-border trade and improve the economic prospects of border communities.
Speaking to a crowd during a mini-campaign rally in Elubo as part of his Western Region tour, Mahama highlighted the untapped potential of border towns like Aflao and Elubo, emphasizing the need for robust market infrastructure to support trading activities.
“Border towns like Elubo and Aflao play crucial roles in trade, yet they lack the modern markets that neighboring towns like Lome enjoy,” he noted. “In Togo’s Lome, there is a thriving market that even attracts Ghanaian traders, but we cannot say the same for Aflao. This is why the NDC’s manifesto includes a commitment to rehabilitate existing market centers and construct new ones in all border towns.”
Mahama further pledged to complete all abandoned development projects in communities like Elubo, reiterating his party’s resolve to create economic hubs that attract traders from neighboring countries while enhancing local commerce.
This proposal aligns with the NDC’s broader vision to promote economic growth through regional trade, ensuring that Ghana’s border towns are not left behind in national development efforts.
