Diella TekuThe flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to introduce a transformative policy, “Adwumawura,” aimed at empowering young entrepreneurs if elected in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking during a campaign stop at Juaso in the Asante-Akim South Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Mahama outlined the ambitious policy, which will provide start-up funding to 10,000 young entrepreneurs annually. This initiative, he explained, is part of the NDC’s comprehensive strategy to address the pressing issue of youth unemployment.
“We will ensure that young people, including those in Asante-Akim South, have access to the resources they need to establish businesses and contribute to the nation’s economic growth,” Mr. Mahama assured a crowd of enthusiastic supporters.
The former president criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for exacerbating economic hardships.
“After eight years in office, this government has failed to protect livelihoods. Development is about improving the welfare of the people, and any government that cannot do this has no justification to remain in office,” he stated.
Mahama also took a swipe at the NPP’s economic management, citing the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi as an example. “They told us they had arrested the dollar and locked it up, but today, one dollar costs 17 Ghana cedis,” he lamented.
Mahama urged voters, particularly in the Ashanti Region, a traditional NPP stronghold, to reassess their loyalty and consider the tangible benefits brought to the region during NDC administrations.
“We have done more for this region than the NPP. It is time to show them that loyalty should not be taken for granted,” he declared.
Maame Sarfoah Appiah, the NDC parliamentary candidate for Asante-Akim South, echoed Mahama’s sentiments, emphasizing the party’s developmental track record and calling for change in the constituency.
“It’s time to elect leadership that prioritizes the people’s needs. The NDC has always been a people-centered party, and together, we can reset this country for economic growth,” she said.
With the “Adwumawura” initiative, Mahama has positioned youth empowerment and entrepreneurship at the forefront of his campaign, promising a future of hope and economic opportunity for Ghana’s younger generation. As the election approaches, the NDC’s message of change and progress resonates with a growing number of Ghanaians seeking solutions to the country’s challenges.
