Kofi Akpaloo Calls for Reprint of Presidential Ballot Papers to Exclude Deceased Candidate’s Image

Kofi Akpaloo, the flagbearer of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to reprint the presidential ballot papers for the upcoming 2024 election. His request comes in response to the inclusion of the late Akua Donkor, former candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), whose image still appears on the ballot. Akpaloo believes that retaining Donkor’s image could lead to voter confusion and potentially affect election outcomes.

Speaking at a press conference on November 13, Akpaloo highlighted his concerns over the impact of votes potentially cast for Donkor, explaining that any votes cast for her would create complications in vote counting and result tabulation. “If a candidate’s image is on the ballot, votes cast for them must be calculated as part of the overall tally. However, in this case, Donkor is no longer alive, raising questions about how votes for her would be handled,” he stated.

Akpaloo argued that the presence of a deceased candidate on the ballot could undermine the integrity of the election process. He emphasized that the EC would have reprinted the ballots if a new flagbearer from the GFP had been approved to contest, asserting that the same action should be taken under the current circumstances. “We don’t want a situation where a losing candidate might challenge the results due to distortions in vote percentages caused by votes cast for Akua Donkor,” he added.
