Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has unveiled a bold plan to tackle environmental degradation while supporting livelihoods in mining communities. Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd at Akrokkeri in the Fomena Constituency during his six-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region, Mahama outlined his vision for sustainable mining practices.

The former president acknowledged the economic importance of small-scale mining, particularly in areas like Adansi, but emphasized the urgent need for environmentally responsible methods. “We recognize the role small-scale mining plays in your lives, but we also know the harm illegal mining, or galamsey, has caused to our environment. The NDC will implement policies to protect your livelihoods and ensure our lands remain productive for generations to come,” Mahama assured the audience.

Mahama’s proposed reforms include reclaiming degraded lands, promoting eco-friendly mining technologies, and strengthening regulations to deter illegal activities. He reiterated his commitment to balancing economic benefits with environmental stewardship, describing his approach as a win-win for miners and the country at large.

“Under my leadership, we will support small-scale miners with modern equipment and training, while enforcing rules that protect our forests, rivers, and farmlands. Together, we can preserve our natural resources and secure a better future,” he stated.

He also urged voters to think critically about the upcoming general elections, highlighting the need for competent leadership to address the nation’s pressing challenges. “This is not the time for blind political loyalty. It’s time to choose leaders who can deliver results and solve the issues affecting your lives,” Mahama added.

The Fomena Constituency, a hub of mining activity, has long grappled with the consequences of unregulated mining, including deforestation, water pollution, and land degradation. Mahama’s focus on sustainability resonated with locals who have seen firsthand the double-edged nature of mining.

With the elections approaching, Mahama’s promises signal a shift toward sustainable development, positioning him as a champion of both environmental conservation and economic empowerment for Ghana’s mining communities.
