John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced a bold commitment to expand higher education infrastructure across Ghana. Addressing chiefs and supporters in Nkatieso, within the Juaboso Constituency of the Western North Region, Mahama pledged to establish public universities in the country’s six newly created regions if elected in the 2024 elections.

Mahama highlighted the NDC’s long-standing dedication to improving educational access and reducing regional disparities. He explained that the initiative aligns with the party’s vision of ensuring every region in Ghana has at least one public university to foster equal opportunities for students nationwide.

“When you examine our track record, you’ll see our commitment to higher education. Under our leadership, we established the University of Development Studies (UDS) for the then Brong Ahafo Region, which didn’t have a public university at the time. Similarly, we set up the University of Allied Health Sciences in the Volta Region and the University of Environment and Sustainable Development in the Eastern Region,” Mahama stated.

He reiterated that the new regions—Western North, Oti, North East, Bono East, Savannah, and Ahafo—would each benefit from dedicated universities or campuses as part of the NDC’s broader education agenda. Mahama urged traditional leaders in these regions to earmark land for the proposed institutions, emphasizing that such preparations would expedite the development process.

“To our traditional leaders, you have an important role to play. As you’ve already allocated lands for tertiary institutions, we’ll work with you to ensure this vision becomes a reality when we assume office,” he added.

This promise reflects the NDC’s broader campaign strategy of addressing critical developmental gaps while solidifying its commitment to equitable education for all Ghanaians. Chiefs, opinion leaders, and community members present at the event welcomed the announcement with enthusiasm, seeing it as a transformative step toward regional development and youth empowerment.

As the 2024 elections draw closer, Mahama’s education-focused pledge underscores the NDC’s vision for national progress and social inclusion.
