Diella TekuJohn Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has reassured Ghanaians that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy will not only continue but will receive renewed focus on quality and sustainable funding under his leadership. During a meeting with Christian leaders in Kumasi on Monday, November 11, Mahama addressed ongoing concerns about the program’s future, emphasizing his commitment to improving its long-term viability.
Rejecting claims that he would abolish Free SHS, Mahama labeled such statements as “political gimmicks,” intended to create unfounded fears among voters. “Free SHS has come to stay,” he asserted, while outlining his approach to enhance the program through consistent financial support.
Mahama underscored the necessity of quality education for Ghana’s youth, indicating that securing reliable funding sources would improve resources, facilities, and overall educational standards. This approach, he explained, would help tackle challenges the program currently faces and ensure it meets the evolving needs of students across the country.
The NDC leader’s remarks come amid ongoing debate between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on optimizing the Free SHS policy. Mahama assured that under his administration, the program would be more than maintained—it would be transformed to deliver a high-quality education that prepares Ghanaian students for a prosperous future.
