Former President John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), likened himself to a “retired army general” returning to the field, as he addressed district and municipal Imams in the Ashanti Region during his six-day campaign tour.

Speaking on December 2, 2024, Mahama highlighted Ghana’s current challenges and pledged to restore economic stability and governance excellence under his leadership.

Mahama emphasized the NDC’s decision to entrust him with leading the party in what he described as a critical period for the nation. “If we go to war and encounter difficulties, we go back to call the retired general to come and lead us. This is a clear illustration of myself. I went to rest, but it is time to come back because we are in a difficult period. I thank all of you for your prayers and guidance,” he stated.

The former president criticized the incumbent government for economic mismanagement and assured the Islamic community that his administration would implement sound policies to alleviate hardship and improve the quality of life for all Ghanaians. Mahama underscored his commitment to tackling governance failures and building a more stable and prosperous Ghana.

Mahama also pledged to address key concerns within the Islamic community, including the legal recognition of Islamic marriages. “Chief Imam has said that a law legitimizing Islamic marriage must be enacted, so we have decided to do that,” he assured. The move reflects his focus on inclusivity and respect for diverse cultural and religious practices.

The visit forms part of Mahama’s broader engagement strategy to rally support across the country as he campaigns for a return to the presidency. His interactions with religious leaders aim to foster collaboration in addressing societal challenges and ensuring holistic national development.
