Diella TekuThe Majority caucus in Parliament has dismissed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus’s call for an apology to Speaker Alban Bagbin, following remarks by New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. The NDC caucus argued that Afenyo-Markin’s comments about the Speaker after the indefinite adjournment of Parliament were an unwarranted attack, sparking demands for a formal apology.
However, Deputy Majority Leader Patricia Appiagyei has asserted that no apology will be issued, maintaining that the NPP caucus acted within parliamentary bounds. Addressing the issue at St. Monica’s Senior High School’s 78th Anniversary and Speech and Prize Giving Day in Mampong, Ashanti Region, Appiagyei underscored the Majority’s intent to recall Parliament to address key government matters. She urged Speaker Bagbin to clarify his recent comments, suggesting that if they were personal opinions rather than formal rulings, he should explicitly state so to avoid misinterpretation.
“The Speaker needs to assert his role clearly,” Appiagyei said. “You can’t take the law into your own hands when he only expressed an opinion, not a ruling.”
The St. Monica’s event, held under the theme “A Healthy Mind Lives in a Healthy Body,” was organized by several year groups, celebrating the school’s legacy and emphasizing holistic student development.
