Marco Silva: Everton Sack Coach After Liverpool Defeat

Marco Silva has been sacked by Everton following the defeat to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby – but how much was Silva getting paid?

Marco Silva saw his Everton side thumped 5-2 in the Merseyside derby. The Toffees have failed to beat city rivals Liverpool at Anfield since 1991. The result also dropped Everton into the Premier League’s relegation zone and Silva sacked the following day.

The Portuguese coach was appointed at Goodison Park on a three-year contract in the summer of 2018.

Speaking at the time, he said: “I’m really proud to be the new Everton manager.

Speaking after the Merseyside derby defeat, he said: “I am not the right person to answer about the situation, this question is for different people.

“We are making some mistakes which put us under big, big pressure.

“The type of mistakes we are making is because the players are playing under big pressure because of the position in the table.”

“I’m excited and I’m really happy to take this big challenge for us as a club and for me as a manager.

“I want to express my thanks to Farhad [Moshiri], to the Chairman, to the Board of Directors and to Marcel [Brands] as well for the confidence in my work.

“I know the huge history of Everton as a club and what the fans expect.

“I’m sure with everybody working together I will be ready for this challenge.”

Silva led the club to a respectable eighth-place finish in his debut season.

But things haven’t gone to plan this term, with Everton winning just four of their opening 15 games.

They are not churning out the results. Star man Gylfi Sigurdsson has only scored one Premier League goal this season.

For all the mitigating factors, Everton has lost five of their last six Premier League games against newly promoted teams, just as much as in their previous 48 combined. Their race to the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup has not proved enough to keep Silva at work.

After an encouraging first season among the Portuguese and a third summer of heavy spending, Everton is now looking for a fifth permanent manager since David Moyes left for Manchester United in 2013.
